The filter in your HVAC system is your main defense against indoor air pollution. Not only do your filters clean the air, they also protect the internal components of your HVAC system from dust and grime. An air filter is integral to the performance of the whole system; if you have a clogged air filter, a lot could go wrong.
Impaired HVAC Efficiency
If you have a clogged air filter, then air cannot circulate through your system efficiently. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), replacing a clogged air filter with a clean one can decrease an HVAC’s energy use by up to 15 percent! The EPA recommends changing your filters once every month during the summer. If you have pets that shed their fur, you may require more frequent filter replacement.
Water Damage
Cooling systems utilize a refrigerant to draw heat from the air and transfer it to cold air. The refrigerant travels through the compressor and the condenser to the evaporator, pulling hot air along with it. Here, a motorized fan blows air across cold coils in the evaporator and directs the cool air into the distribution system, where it is distributed throughout the home or facility.
If you have a clogged air filter, then dirt is able to make it into the HVAC system and settle on the cooling coils. This can cause the coils to become so cold that they form a layer of frost. When the system turns off, the frost melts and drips water, potentially damaging the equipment and creating an environment that encourages mold growth. Sometimes, a clogged air filter can be sucked from its position into the equipment, which poses a fire hazard.
Poor Indoor Air Quality
A clogged air filter does not capture pollutants the way it should. If the filter is working under capacity, that means that these pollutants will make it through they HVAC system and be constantly circulated throughout the space. This not only damages the ducts, but it can also cause problems for individuals with allergies and asthma as well. Plus, if you have mold growth as a result of water from cooling coils, then you are put even more at risk of triggering an individual’s allergies.
