There’s nothing worse than trying to turn your furnace on on a cold night only to find that you can’t get it to turn on. Many people do not know what to do when the furnace stops working. However, there are a few steps you can take if you find that you are in some furnace trouble.
Check Your Thermostat
Before you decide that your furnace is broken altogether, make sure that the problem is not your thermostat. When it looks like your furnace stops working, it may just be that your thermostat has a low battery or is not properly set. If your thermostat is at the right temperature, try replacing the battery and see if that gets everything back on track.
Take a Look at the Switches, Breakers, and Pilot Light
If it’s not the thermostat, it may be that you have tripped a circuit. Take a look at your circuit breaker and if it’s been tripped, turn it back on. See if this takes care of the problem. If your circuit breaker keeps tripping, it definitely needs to be serviced. Make sure your furnace is on and if it has a pilot light, that it’s lit.
Check the Gas Line and Vents
Make sure that your gas line is set to open so the gas can actually travel into your home. If the gas line is not open, twist it to open so your home can get what it needs to warm. Then check the air intake vents to make sure they are in working order and not obviously obstructed. If you have furniture over vents this can make it feel like your home is not heating even though everything is working perfectly. Make sure that you are not sabotaging your own heating system with ill-placed furniture and decor.
